White metal diamond jewelry highlights Indian fashion show

Wearing lovely white metal diamond jewelry models walked down the ramp at a dimond fashion show held in New Delhi, India in February.

This was the first time that white metal diamond jewelry was shown in India. Usually diamonds here are put on white metal that is silver quoted with gold so that it is more affordable. The gold coating on the white metal provides a very high shine.

The fashion show was unique because it showed the timelessness of conventional jewelry designs and brought them into a modern context.

Very popular models were at the diamond fashion show, such as Carol Gracious, Vidisha Pavate, Nayonika Chatterjee and Amanpreet Wahi.

Also at the diamond fashion event was Member of Parliament Shatrughan Sinha, fashion designer Puja Nayyar, jewelry designer Naina Balsawar and singer Shibani Kashyap.

The money earned from the jewelry fashion show went to the Rotary Eye Bank, and there were many buyers on hand.

The trade of gems and jewelry is one of the fastest growing industries in India, with 13% of the country’s total exports.

Botswanan women show off Botswana diamonds

Three powerful Botswana women will discuss the benefits of the diamond trade in their country at a meeting March 21 at London’s Chatam House.

The women are the chief executive officer of De Beers Botswana, Sheila Khama; attorney general, Athaliah Molokomme; and governor of the Bank of Botswana, Linah Mohohlo.

The three women three will discuss the opening of the Diamond Trading Company Botswana (DTCB), which will occur March 18.  The three women will talk about the importance of the diamond trade in their country.

The largest industry in Botswana is diamonds, which is 33% of the country’s GDP. With the opening of the diamond trading company, Botswana will have one of the world’s largest diamond sorting and valuing plants.

The new diamond industry in the country should cause other industries to sprout, including polishing and manufacturing.

Diamonds can now be found in space

Scientists have now discovered a way to find diamonds in space using an infrared telescope.

Diamonds from space are actually quite common, but they are very small. Approximately 25,000 could fit in one grain of sand.

Space diamonds are made of carbon like those on earth, so studying them could assist scientists in discovering how molecules made of carbon develop. Carbon is the building block of life on earth.

Space diamonds form in a very different way than on earth, where they are created through high pressure and temperature. In space they form through very low pressure and temperatures that drop to -400 Fahrenheit.

The place to seek space diamonds are in some meteorites that have fallen to earth. About 3% of the carbon inside is in the form of nanometer-sized diamonds.

Rare purple diamonds found in Quebec

DIANOR RESOURCES and WEMINDJI EXPLORATION have uncovered very rare purple diamonds from their Ekomiak V property in the James Bay, Quebec region.

Workers from the firms found 649 diamonds, including nine purple diamonds, from 18 surface rock samples that were thought to be 2.7 billion years old.

Natural, fancy-colored diamonds are rare and expensive. Purple is one of the rarest colors.

The biggest purple diamond is 335 x 379 x 225 microns. All of the colored stones came from samples with high diamond counts. The biggest white diamond was one measure 1.06 x .98 x .56 mm.

Laurence Graff brings $15 million in necklaces to auction

Billionaire British diamond jeweler Laurence Graff brought in the holidays this week by flying in two huge diamond necklaces worth $15 million from London for auction. This was for the company’s mid-December cocktail party for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s 17th Annual Discovery Ball.

One necklace consisted of white diamonds with a 30-carat pink briolette and another had three strands with white diamonds and 1,000 carats of rubies.

Some of the guests on hand at the ball included Bridget Koch, Petra Levin, and Ellen Jaffe. They were the first guests to see the company’s grand auction donation – a white gold and diamond bracelet that runs $50,000.

Graff has recently opened stories in Tokyo and Hong Kong, as well as at Saks Fifth Avenue in Greenwich, CT, USA. He also has a 5,600-square-foot shop on Madison and 63rd Street in New York and a Geneva boutique is to open in 2008.

Diamond sales not so recession proof after all, according to Harry Winston

It has long been believed that diamonds are recession proof, always holding their value, such as those found in expensive stores such as Harry Winston.

The logic is that anyone who can buy a $20,000 pair of earrings is too rich to cut spending because of a slow economy.

However, recent financial data from Harry Winston Diamond Corp. suggests that luxury items may not be so immune from recession.

The fluctuating stock market in the US that started this past summer, caused in part by the credit crunch in the housing market, worried investors on Wall Street, so much so that they stopped purchasing diamonds.

Sales at Harry Winston stores in the US dropped 22 percent to $19.4 million US in sales in Q3, compared to numbers in 2006. The volatility in the US economy is being blamed by the Canadian firm. Softer diamond sales are resulting because much of the company’s business is driven by New York City.

Harry Winston retail sales from August-October 2007 were $53.8 million. This is less than the $54.5 million sold in the same period last year.

GIA launches new educational website aimed at holiday diamond buyers

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA)  is trying to help diamond buyers this holiday season with the launch of a new educational site to help people buy good diamonds.

The website, www.gia4cs.gia.edu, states that 40 percent of couples have their engagements between November and February, so this is a good time to brush up on your diamond buying skills.

According to the site, it is very important to choose a highly qualified jeweler, do your research on what your bride likes, learn the ‘four C’s’ of diamond quality, and stress that your jeweler give you an INDEPENDENT diamond grading report for the diamond you want to buy.

Next, make sure you get a good appraisal of your diamond and have it properly insured. If you do not know what your bride to be would want in a ring, the site advises to buy the stone alone without the setting. This way she can have the ring set in the way that most pleases her.

The site also warns that general members of the public risk being fooled by unscrupulous diamond dealers. Most of us do not know the difference between natural, synthetic or treated diamonds. Without the basic knowledge given at GIA’s site, it would be easy for people to not get what they pay for.

Graff cuts Lesotho Diamond into 26 gems worth $50 million US

Famed jeweler Laurence Graff has cut the Lesotho Promise diamond into smaller diamonds worth $50 million US or more, according to wire reports. He will display these gems at his London workshop.

Graff purchased the 603-carat diamond from Gem Diamonds Ltd. For $12.4 million in 2006. Gem Diamonds is a miner of precious gems in Africa. It is reported that Graff used a team of 35 people to cut and polish the stone to produce 26 diamonds that weigh 224.11 carats in total weight.

Graff has jewelry workshops in five cities and stores from Moscow to Las Vegas to Dubai. He is a self-made billionaire with a fortune of $3.1 billion.

Graff reported that he paid $1.2 million per carat for a blue diamond, noting that diamond prices have more science involved than with paintings and other arts. He said that diamonds are priced according to carat and there is a rarity factor involved with diamonds of different colors. Painting prices are more subjective and tend to fluctuate more.

Need a Good-Paying Job? Consider San Diego Website Design, High Tech Jobs and More

Even with an unemployment rate soaring into the double digits, there are many technical jobs still unfilled in the San Diego area, recent indicators have suggested.

According to our contacts in the area, some of the most in demand jobs include San Diego website design opportunities. In fact, as of February 2011, there were up to 6,000 design jobs still unfilled in the county.

Some of the website design jobs that we saw that need people included web developers, Flash designers, database developers, e-commerce professionals, and search engine optimization experts.

In a survey of IT companies in the area, we discovered that there are quite a few San Diego website design companies in need of PHP/Myself developers, as well. Many of the companies looking for these developers needed people who had a lot of experience with Wordpress and Magento projects.

In the same survey, some of the other San Diego website design jobs that needed to be filled were in portal development and design, corporate intranet and extranet development, and also development of different types of custom web applications. One of the large companies looking for web designers in San Diego is Intuit, a maker of online applications and financial software. The firm actually hired 350 high tech workers in San Diego last year.

According to the CEO at Skybox Creative, a top web design and web development consultancy, this area is one of the top places in California for IT jobs. However, even with the high quality universities here with top programs in web design, engineering and biotechnology, many professionals leave the area for places with a lower cost of living.

Another issue for recent San Diego school graduates is that they are attracted by high paying tech jobs in Silicon Valley. One of our contacts downtown told us, “Just about every website and software design grad around here gets job offers from Facebook and Google and they leave town,” he said.

Still, it remains a fact, however, that many profitable job opportunities abound in San Diego website design and other high tech fields. It’s definitely worth your time to investigate them.

What Vision Screening Professionals Absolutely Need to Know About Vision Testers

The most important tool a vision screening professional uses to measure eye health is a stereo optical vision tester. However, vision testing is not always considered to be an important part of an eye examination by busy vision screening professionals.  The fact remains though that there is no better way to check on the progression of many eye diseases than one of these devices.

The best testers are able to measure visual acuity, potential visual acuity, contract sensitivity, glare and color. Good vision testers should require no physical interaction and should automatically refract and allow minute refinements in sphere and cylinder to provide the best optimal subjective refraction. The device should offer 16 white LEDs and a diffuser system for thorough lighting.  Two optical paths typically are provided, which is key for patients who wear glasses with protective lenses.

It should be able to perform many vision screening tests in one sitting, including distance and near visual acuity testing, astigmatism, phorias, stereopsis, fusion, ARMD, glare testing, contrast sensitivity and potential acuity testing. The device should be lightweight (10 pounds or less), and adaptable to each patient and allow them to sit in a relaxed position throughout testing. Some vision testers also do peripheral visual field analysis. It also should have user-friendly software to save and print patient data and results.  All of the tests should be finished within 2-4 minutes.

The latest generation of these tools  provides vision screening professionals with all aspects of vision assessment in one rapid screening device. In fact, a top notch vision tester – such as this one – is probably just as important a tool as a strabismoscope!

Pet Stores, Pets

The Internet has revolutionized the way people shop for just about everything, and pet supplies are no exception. The advent of online pet stores means that no longer do you have to drive to pick up things for your favorite pet. They can be delivered right to your door! Also, keep in mind that you usually have access to far more pet-related products at an online store than you do at many local pet shops. Plus, you often do not have to pay any sales tax at an online pet store.

An online pet store is typically divided into various sections by animal. You may see a section for dogs, cats, birds and reptiles, for example. In the section for dogs, you could see subcategories such as new pet, auto travel, beds, carriers, clean up, collars and leashes, kennels, dog clothes, flea and tick prevention, gates and doors, grooming supplies, health care, chew toys, and housebreaking aids.

The selection of pet supplies you will find at an online store will amaze you!

Each section in the site will usually have a top-selling products section. This definitely makes your buying experience easier. You can just browse what most other dog or cat owners are buying for their pets. If you see, for example, that many other cat owners are buying a particular type of flea collar, that may give you more confidence in your buying decision. It’s also very easy to research online the best pet product -- for example, a dog leash – and then go back to the online store and buy it.

Online pet stores don’t just sell products. They also provide you with plenty of free information that you don’t have to leave your house to read. For example, you will probably find plenty of “how-to” articles on how to care for a new pet, such as housebreaking, the importance of proper grooming, preventive care, choosing the right food for your dog, and preventing dental diseases. Other common article subjects at online pet stores include pets and kids, pet care for seniors, and winterizing your pet. Very often, you can learn most basic information on how to care for a new pet from this online information without spending any money at all! Just print the pet article out and refer to it as you need it.

One of the new features at some online pet stores is an online pet adoption center. That’s right: You can now search for your new pet through a database of thousands of animals from across the United States.

Many online stores have free newsletter sign-up programs. You can receive a lot of free, helpful information about how to care for your pet delivered right into your email inbox. Another plus is you can receive an email as soon as an out-of-stock pet supply comes in. No more need to make phone calls to the local pet store.

Of course, if you want to see what the store has to offer in person, most stores have a store locator. Just type in your zip code, and you can find the pet store nearest you.

In summary, shopping at an online pet store offers consumers many advantages: convenience, product selection, free information and newsletters, and online adoption.

Canine Virus

Canine virus infection first appeared around 1978, and is arousing a great deal of public interest because of the severity and rapid spread of the disease. The virus is similar to distemper in cats. In fact, the diseases are almost identical. Some even think the canine virus is a mutation of the cat virus.

The main source of the canine virus is the feces of infected dogs. Feces from an infected dog may have a high concentration of the virus. Animals get sick by ingesting the virus, which then goes to the intestine and invades the intestinal wall.

The canine virus is stable resists the effects of heat, detergents, and alcohol. As a matter of fact, the virus has been recovered from dog feces even after three months at room temperature. This means the virus can be easily passed by the hair or feet of infected dogs, clothes, shoes and other household objects. No direct contact between dogs is necessary to spread canine virus. Infected dogs usually become ill within 7-10 days.

The disease usually causes the dog to experience severe vomiting and diarrhea, which can contain blood in some cases. Infected dogs usually have no appetite, experience fever and act depressed. You should also know that the canine virus can affect dogs in all age ranges, but it occurs most frequently in dogs less than one year old.  Dogs younger than five months old usually are the most severely affected and can be difficult to treat.

Diagnosing the disease can be a challenge for vets. Usually the vet needs to see the virus in the feces of the dog, or detect anti-CPV antibodies in the blood. Sometimes a dog can have canine virus but test negative in the stool sample.

The virus cannot be killed once it is in the dog. But the virus itself does not cause death. Usually it is caused by the lining of the intestinal tract being disintegrated. This often causes the bacteria that live in the intestines to get into the blood stream, which usually is fatal.

Treatment involves hydration and to correct electrolyte imbalances in the infected dog. Intravenous fluids are need that contain electrolytes. To control septicemia, antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs are given.

Most dogs with the virus can survive if treatment is given early on. Some breeds tend to die more frequently from the virus, especially Rottweilers.

To prevent your dog from getting the canine virus, keep him vaccinated. Puppies usually receive a shot for parvo at 8, 12 and 16 weeks. All dogs should be given a booster shot at least once per year. Dogs that are at risk for high exposure, such as at kennels and dog shows, should get a booster every six months. Pregnant dogs should be given a booster shot two weeks before the puppies are born so the vaccine has a chance to work into the puppies themselves.

Jack Russell

The Jack Russell terrier is a small, compact, athletic dog that resembles a Fox Terrier. These dogs are white (at least 51%) with reddish black, tan, or brown markings, particularly in the head and tail. The dog’s nose is always black and its almond-shaped eyes are dark brown. The ears are v-shaped and fold forward.

The Jack Russell features a flexible body and a rather small chest that allows him to get low to the ground after his prey. The dog carries his docked tail gaily and it is set rather high. The coat is rough and also smooth in some spots, and it has long body hair, a bit of a fuzzy face and a smooth head.

An Irish-type called Jack Russell Shortys have shorter legs than the English-type.

The Jack Russell is a very devoted and loving dog, and is also rather perky and happy most of the time. The Russell is spirited and obedient, but at the same time, absolutely fearless. His careful and amusing nature makes him content to play games and toys. The dog also is friendly and kind to children, who have learned not to tease or hit the dog.

Intelligent, willful and determined, the Jack Russell can be difficult to train, and an experienced trainer is often needed. This dog can be aggressive with other dogs if not properly trained; some of them have been killed in dog fights.  If you don’t want this to happen to your dog, socialization in the early months can help to eliminate this trait.

This terrier has stronger hunting instincts than most terriers, so you should not trust it with other small animals.

Jack Russells like to chase things and explore, so do not let them off the leash unless you have trained the dog well. They also like to dig and bark and can get restless and destructive without proper exercise. They also can climb and jump well, and can clear a fence five feet high. This is a big dog in a little dog’s body, so is not for an inexperienced dog owner. Remember that you need to be as strong-willed as your dog, or the dog will take over your life!

The Jack Russell terrier can do fine in an apartment if you give it enough exercise. But if you have it in an apartment, a dog crate is recommended for when you are not home. The dog can tend to get destructive if it does not have enough to do. This will also prevent the dog from going to the bathroom in the house; most dogs will not soil the place where they sleep unless absolutely necessary. When you get home, be ready to get your Jack Russell some exercise, unless you want to be annoyed all evening with requests for belly rubs and tug of war games!

Terrier Rescue

Dog rescue services, including terrier rescue, exist for any of these breeds that may have been turned in by their owners or found as strays.  The fact is that many people buy a dog without doing proper research about the breed. After the purchase, many find that they cannot handle the dog. With terriers, some people buy one and do not understand how difficult the breed can be and then cannot handle the temperament.  Often these dogs end up in animal shelters. The rescue service usually is contacted by a desperate dog owner and then brings the dog to the terrier rescue site. Other times, the rescue service needs to pay to get the dog out of the shelter, which is something they would rather not do. Terrier rescues are non-profits, so money is forever tight.

Once the terrier is brought to a terrier rescue, the animal is inspected for health issues, spayed or neutered. They are also examined to determine the dog’s temperament.  The shelter provides the terrier with a home-like setting until a new home for the pet can be located.

These dogs are frequently brought to terrier rescues because the dogs are very independent thinker. Working or sporting breeds usually want to please you, but a terrier is often not interested in your feelings on things. He will often ignore you if there are other things on his mind, such as chasing or hunting something.  He will come when called if it is convenient for him.  The smaller terrier breeds love to dig, so they can tear up a back yard rather quickly.

Terriers are tenacious, independent, and very intelligent dogs.  They always want to know what is going on and always want to be with you.

If you do not want a dog like this, you should not buy one, or you may end up taking yours to a terrier rescue. Remember that the dog will not change; this is what terriers are like. All terriers should be in a fenced yard outside if they are not on a leash. They will not change! This is what they are like.   They must always be in a securely fenced yard when not on a lease.  You need to know that a terrier will run and not come back.  He will run for the pure thrill of it, and you may not ever see your terrier again!

If you are want a dog that is well behaved at all times, you probably should not buy a terrier. However, if you don’t mind a dog making you look silly and you have a good sense of humor, a terrier may be up your alley.  If you don't mind having your dog make a fool of you and you have a great sense of humor, then these dogs may be just what you are looking for.

Many of the terriers in shelters and animal rescues are there because they took off from home and their owners couldn’t find them.

Terriers are wonderful breeds and great pets, but you should know what they are like before you get one. For example, wire fox terriers are very active and demand a great deal of attention. They are curious and this can get them into trouble. They are smart, but they only learn what they are interested in learning.

Remember when you are thinking about a terrier that a high percentage of dogs of all breeds go to animal shelters, not because of what they did, but because the owners had unreasonable expectations.  You don’t want your terrier to end up in a terrier rescue!

Pit bulls

Pit bulls are wonderful dogs in the proper hands. If you are prepared to research the breed and devote the time to take care of it, your dog will be a wonderful pet.  But in the wrong hands, pit bulls can be trouble and even dangerous. This is the reason that owners need to be educated on these dogs. People should know what they are buying when they take that dog home, and keep learning about the breed after they bring it home.

These dogs are often reviled in the media as vicious and cruel. While it is true that pits are bred for aggressive behavior towards other dogs in some circumstances, it is simply untrue that pit bulls cannot make suitable pets.

The statistics bear out the above paragraph. In 2002-2004, the pit bull outperformed the golden retriever in temperament. This isn’t something you will read in most newspapers.

The pit bull is not a dog to buy if you are looking for a casual pet ownership situation. That is, you just want to take the dog for a walk every few days, feed it and that’s it. Many pit bulls will behave like many other more mellow breeds, but you should not expect every dog of this breed to be this way. This dog is tough and intelligent, and has been bred to test its strength against other dogs. It is not unusual for a pit bull to fight with other dogs, but to be very friendly toward humans. To expect a dog to go against the nature it was bred for is not fair to the animal, so be aware of what you are getting into with a pit bull.

One common misconception about these dogs is that the dog’s temperament is only influenced by how the dog is raised. Aggression between species and within a species of dog is very common, including Atikas, Rottweilers, Dobermans, and terriers. These kind of dogs will show little tolerance for other kinds of dogs. But dog aggression is not something that cannot be handled by a responsible owner. But it does require you to be aware and responsible. If you do not want to put the time and effort into dealing with a pit bull, it is best to get another breed.

Also remember that many famous people have owned this breed of dog. Some of the people include Helen Keller, Michael J. Fox, Fred Astaire, Teddy Roosevelt. Also, Pete the Dog on Little Rascals was a pit bull.

This dog has a great amount of strength and stamina. So one of the most popular and growing activities with pits is weight pulling. The pit bull will compete with other dogs of the same size in pulling a weighted cart.
